Bowel Prep for Surgery: Fleets Phospho-Soda

Certain surgical procedures require a bowel prep. Your doctor will tell you if you should do a bowel prep. If you are still unsure if your surgery needs a bowel prep, you should call your doctor's office.

Bowel Prep

  • At your local drug store you can pick up an item called "Fleets Phospho-Soda."
  • The day before surgery you should eat a normal lunch.
  • After lunch, you should have only clear liquids. You will not eat dinner, but can have clear liquids instead. Examples of clear liquids are:
    • Chicken broth
    • Jello
    • Apple or Cranberry juices
    • Water
  • At 4:00pm the day before your surgery you will use 30ml of the Fleets Phospho-Soda. Depending on what size bottle you have, there will probably be some left over.
  • Taking the Fleets Phospho-Soda will cause you to have bowel movements and empty your bowel. You will probably want to be at home and close to the bathroom during this time.
  • You should have nothing else to eat or drink after midnight. If you do, your surgery may need to be rescheduled.
