Gestational Diabetes: Signs of Low Blood Sugar
 
 


If you are pregnant and on insulin for diabetes, the following are signs and symptoms that you should look out for:

  • Feeling shaky or nervous
  • Feeling very hungry
  • Getting a headache
  • Feeling dizzy or lightheaded
  • Feeling grouchy or irritable
  • Feeling sleepy, confused, or not thinking clearly
  • Breaking out in a cold sweat
  • Feeling your heart beat fast
  • Feeling numness in your lips or fingers

If you notice any of the symptoms listed above, here is what you should do:

  1. Check your blood sugar and write it down. If your blood sugar is below 60 eat ONE of the following:
    • 1 cup milk (skim or low-fat) or...
    • 1/2 cup juice or...
    • 3-4 glucose tablets or...
    • 1/2 of a regular 12oz can of regular soda (not diet) or...
    • 6 Lifesavers candies or...
    • 1 tablespoon of honey or sugar or...
    • 15-20 Skittles or...
    • 3 tabelspoons raisins or...
    • 1 tube glucose gel or cake gel
  2. Wait 15 minutes and check your blood sugar again.
  3. If your blood sugar is still below 60, repeat steps #1 and #2.
  4. If the treatment works (your symptoms go away), then eat. If it is mealtime, eat your meal. If it will be more than an hour before mealtime, eat 1/2 of a sandwich.
  5. Call your doctor if you have low blood sugar more than once per week or if you do not feel better 30 mintues after treatment.
