What is a Sitz bath?

  • A sitz bath is a type of bath where only the hips and buttocks are soaked in water. Sometimes, saline solution (tap water with about 1/2 cup of salt or epsom salt) can be used, but it is not usually necessary.
  • Sitz baths can be done with either warm or cool water. Use whatever feels best.

Do I need any special equipment to do a Sitz bath?

  • Sitz baths are commonly done using a regular bathtub filled with 3-4 inches of water. No other special equipment is needed.

Why would I do a Sitz bath?

  • Sitz baths help to relieve discomfort in the areas of the vagina, rectum, and perineum which can occur as a result of childbirth (vaginal delivery), surgical or office procedures, or hemorrhoids.

Is warm or cool water best for a Sitz bath?

  • Warm Sitz baths are often the best way to ease the pain of hemorrhoids. It can also be used to relieve discomfort associated with genital herpes, menstrual cramping and other painful conditions in the pelvic area (such as those that occur after childbirth).
  • Cool Sitz baths can help ease inflammation, constipation, or vaginal discharge.

Instructions for Sitz bath:

  • Fill the bathtub with 3 or 4 inches of warm or cool water.
  • Lower your pelvic area into the water and soak for 10-15 minutes.
  • Stand up from the bathtub and gently pat the area dry.
