The baby has no protection from the drugs you take. The food that you eat, the beverages that you drink, and the drugs that you take pass directly from you to your baby.
Smoking marijuana while you are pregnant can affect your baby's development. Marijuana can cut off the oxygen and food supply to your baby. This can affect the development of your baby after she or he is born, causing the child to have trouble concentrating, thinking, and learning.
Babies who are exposed to marijuana during pregnancy can have problems right after birth. If you smoke marijuana during pregnancy, your baby may experience the "shakes" right after birth. This will make it hard for you to comfort your baby and settle him or her down. It can also cause your baby to have a hard time responding to you.
Marijuana can cross over into your breast milk. If you smoke marijuana while you are breastfeeding, it can hurt your baby's brain development.
Second hand smoke can cause harm to your baby. Breathing second hand (marijuana or tobacco) smoke can cause your baby to cough, and have colds and ear infections.
A child whose mother smoked marijuana during pregnancy may have learning and behavior problems in school. Children exposed to marijuana while in the womb can have trouble learning to talk and can have trouble paying attention to what you say. They are also more likely to have problems in school such as paying attention in class, being aggressive with other children, and having a hard time staying focused when they are trying to solve a problem.
If you are pregnant, it is never too late to quit smoking marijuana. The baby's body and brain will grow better if you stop smoking marijuana.
No matter how far along you are in your pregnancy, it will be much better for your baby if you quit smoking marijuana today.
